Got Dating Anxiety? Here's How To Overcome It

Dating anxiety

Do you struggle with dating anxiety? You definitely want to have a relationship, but just thinking about meeting someone new or going on a date makes your heart race and your palms sweat. You're not alone — a lot of people feel anxious about dating. The good news is that there are ways to overcome it so you can enjoy the dating experience more!

Understanding Dating Anxiety

First, let’s define dating anxiety. It’s that uneasy feeling you get when you think about going out with someone new. Maybe you're worried about saying the wrong thing, or you're afraid your date won't like you. Proverbs 12:25 says, "Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up." Knowing you're not alone can help lift some of that worry.

Common Reasons for Dating Anxiety

  • Fear of Rejection: Perhaps you can’t stop worrying about whether the other person will like you back (or you have other dating fears).

  • Self-Doubt: You might struggle with your self-worth — feeling like you’re not good enough, smart enough, attractive enough, successful enough, funny enough, etc.

  • Past Experiences: Bad dates in the past make you nervous about future ones, and past heartbreak makes it hard to trust again.

Tips to Overcome Dating Anxiety

You’re very familiar with dating anxiety — you experience it. So the real question is how to overcome it. Here are a few ways to start calming your nerves about dating.

1. Be Yourself

Trying to be someone you're not can add extra stress. It's important to be true to yourself. Psalm 139:14 says, "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." You are unique and special just the way God made you. You’ve got to remember that while dating.

2. Prepare for Dates

Feeling prepared for a date can help lower your anxiety. Think about some topics you can talk about or questions you can ask. This way, you won't feel as nervous about keeping the conversation going.

Some easy-to-remember conversation starters are:

  • What's your favorite way to spend a weekend?

  • If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

  • What's the best meal you've ever had?

  • Do you have any hidden talents or hobbies?

  • What's the most interesting place you've ever visited?

  • What kind of music do you enjoy listening to the most?

3. Stay Positive

Focus on the good things about dating. Meeting new people can be exciting, and you might find a great connection. Philippians 4:8 reminds us to keep our minds focused on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. Keeping a positive mindset can really help calm dating anxiety.

4. Take Deep Breaths

If you start to feel anxious, take a few deep breaths. Inhale slowly through your nose, hold it for a moment, and then exhale through your mouth. This simple trick can calm your nerves right away. (Plus you can do it while sitting across from your date, and they aren’t going to notice!)

5. Remember “ABP”

Always be praying (ABP). Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” By staying connected to God through prayer, you'll find comfort and guidance to overcome dating anxiety and go into each date more confidently.

You have the strength within you to face your fears and enjoy the journey of dating. Remember, each date is a new opportunity to grow, connect, and potentially find someone special — you're never alone on this path. God is with you always.
