Dating can feel overwhelming, can’t it? You meet someone, and things seem to be going well, but then your mind starts spinning. Is this the right person? Where is this headed? Will they judge my past? Instead of enjoying what’s happening now, you’re already imagining five steps ahead. But here’s the thing — you don’t have to live like that. (It certainly doesn’t make for a very enjoyable dating experience.) Let’s talk about how you can stop worrying about the future and trust God with your dating life.
Focus On Today, Not Tomorrow
It’s easy to get caught up in “what ifs.” But here’s the reality: you’re not in control of tomorrow! In Matthew 6:34, Jesus tells us, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” When you start to spiral, pull yourself back to the moment. What’s something you can enjoy about this person or experience today? Ask God to help you live fully in the present.
Remember Who Is in Charge
You don’t have to figure it all out. Take a deep breath. God already has a plan for your life, including your relationships. Jeremiah 29:11 tells us, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” Trust that God’s plan is good, even if you don’t have all the details yet.
And we know that’s easier said than done, so here are three practical things you can do to refocus your trust in God:
Pause and Pray: Take a moment to stop what you’re doing and talk to God. Ask Him to help you trust His plan, even when it’s hard. Share your worries and leave them with Him.
Write It Down: Grab a journal and list out the things you’re grateful for today. This helps remind you of God’s faithfulness and shifts your focus from fear to gratitude.
Read Scripture Daily: Spend a few minutes reading and meditating on verses like Philippians 4:6. Highlight or memorize ones that remind you of God’s promises, and lean on them when doubts or dating fears creep in.
Stop Overthinking Every Little Thing
Maybe you’ve found yourself analyzing every text, every smile, every pause. Guess what? That’s exhausting! Instead of overthinking, lean into prayer. When your thoughts race, ask God for clarity and peace. Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Give your worries to Him — not just once, but as many times as it takes.
Enjoy The Process
God created relationships to be a blessing, not a burden. Dating should be fun! Instead of worrying about where this is headed, focus on getting to know this person better. Laugh together, ask meaningful questions, and be yourself.
Most importantly, trust God to guide you. He knows what’s best for you, and He’s walking with you every step of the way. When you surrender your worries to Him, you can relax and enjoy the gift of this season.
