Making the First Move: Dating Do's and Don'ts

Dating do's and don'ts for making the first move

Whether you match with someone on a dating app or meet in person, there comes a time when someone has to make the first move to take things to the next level. Should you ask them on a date? Tell them you have deeper feelings? Break the “touch barrier” and hold their hand? Here are some dating do’s and don’ts to follow when making the first move.

Do Be Honest About Your Feelings

It can be nerve-racking being the first one to express how you feel. But honesty is important. You might say something simple like, "I really enjoy spending time with you and would like to get to know you better." Remember, "Love must be sincere" (Romans 12:9).

Don’t Overthink It

It's easy to get caught up in what-ifs and maybes. Try to keep things simple. If you're constantly analyzing every detail, you might miss out on the joy of the moment. Trust your instincts and focus on having fun.

Do Be Yourself

You are awesome, just the way you are! Keep Psalm 139:14 in mind, which says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Pretending to be someone else can be exhausting and confusing. Show your true colors, and you'll find someone who appreciates you for you.

Don’t Be Pushy

Be sure to pay close attention to body language to make sure you aren’t making the other person feel uncomfortable. For example, if you do go for the hand-hold, ask if it’s okay first. It’s important to show how you feel while respecting their feelings and boundaries as well.

Do Come Prepared

If you’re about to profess your feelings and make the first move to take your relationship to the next level, it’s okay to prepare what you’re going to do or say. This will not only make you feel more comfortable, but it’ll also help the conversation go smoothly. Think about what you want to say and maybe even practice a little.

By following these simple dating do's and don'ts, you'll be ready to make a great first move. Trust yourself and have fun with it! Remember, taking the first step can be exciting when it's done with kindness and respect.
