What Does It Mean To Date in a Christ-Like Way?

Wondering how to honor God while building a relationship with someone? To date in a Christ-like way means looking at Jesus’ life and teachings and letting them guide how you treat the person you’re with. It’s about showing love, respect, and kindness — not just in words but in how you act. Here’s what that can look like when you date.

Love Like Jesus

Jesus says in John 13:34, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” Jesus’ love wasn’t selfish. He cared deeply about others and put their needs ahead of his own.

When you’re dating, this means being kind, patient, and thoughtful. Don’t just think about what you’re getting out of the relationship. Ask yourself, “How can I serve this person?” This could look as simple as listening when they’ve had a tough day or being patient instead of snapping during an argument. Forgiveness is also an act of love. Nobody is perfect, and it’s important to extend grace when mistakes happen, just as Christ extends grace to you.

Be Honest and Humble

Jesus never pretended to be something he wasn’t. He spoke truthfully but with care. Colossians 3:9 says, “Do not lie to each other.”

Being honest means being clear with your words. If something’s bothering you, say it with gentleness. Honesty also means not leading someone on. If you’re not sure about the relationship, don’t fake your feelings to avoid an awkward conversation. It’s better to be upfront than to give false hope.

Humility also matters. Philippians 2:3 reminds us to “value others above yourselves.” This doesn’t mean thinking less of yourself, but showing respect for the other person’s opinions and feelings. Avoid being prideful or stubborn, and instead, aim to be a safe place for them to share their heart.

Practice Purity

Jesus called us to live pure lives. 1 Corinthians 6:18-19 tells us to “flee from sexual immorality” because your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Set clear boundaries together to honor God and protect each other emotionally and spiritually. Purity also applies to your thoughts and words. Don’t use dating as an excuse to be selfish or manipulative.

Keep God at the Center

Most importantly, keep God first. Pray for your relationship and for wisdom in every decision. Matthew 6:33 says to “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness,” and everything else will fall into place.

When you date in a Christ-like way, it isn’t about being perfect. It’s about trying to reflect Jesus as you grow closer to another person. When you date with faith and love, you create a foundation that honors God and blesses both of you.
